The best is yet to come!

It really has been a memorable summer for two main reasons. Firstly what a sporting year with the European Football Championships and of course the Olympics. Secondly, the weather, need I say more! However, the most important sporting event is yet to happen. It is The Olney Duck and Raft Race, which had to be postponed from June. It was a difficult decision to delay the competition but there was just too much water! The river level was very high and flowing too fast.

The new date is Sunday September 16th where you will see competition unlike anywhere else, move over the Olympics! Two thousand plastic ducks battling from the weir to be first under the bridge with the first prize of £100 - much better odds than the National Lottery and all the proceeds go to our local Scout group. The main event is Raft Race, which for teams can be anything they want, trying to be first or raising money by sponsorship or just in it for fun. I know that the Olney Runners are desperate to take the course record having missed out by just a few seconds last year but will the Hollow Wood Surfers give up without a fight? Can anyone beat The Pink Ladies from the Two Brewers who last year raised £500 in aid of Breast Cancer?

At the weir in Emberton Park the event opens at 12.00 with the Duck Race starting at 13.00 and the rafts beginning at 13.45. The race finish is at the bathing steps on the East St Playing fields where the mini fun-day starts at 14.00. There will be a fantastic and diverse range of food and drink for you to sample. Also have fun on our side-shows and children’s fair. It’s definitely time to get a team together and start building a raft be it a speed machine or like a couple of years ago perfect scale model of Thunderbird 2 complete with smoke coming out of the rocket engines – amazing!

Photo Competition
New for 2012 we are running a photo  competition with the best pictures being published in the Phonebox. You do not  need to be an expert with an expensive camera, use your phone or pocket camera. What the judges want to see are exciting and interesting shots that reflect the
day but not necessarily worrying about perfect picture quality. There are two age groups, under or over 18. There will be just two categories, best action shot of the raft race and best picture capturing a fun moment of the day –  anything really except rafts! Just e-mail your photo to
theolneygroup@hotmail.co.uk  Please, only one photo per entrant. Closing date September 20th

And finally why not check out the new  website
http://theolneygroup.org where you can find out more details about Race day and other future events. There is  also information about what TOG (The Olney Group) is all about.
